The Joyful Rebellion: Lead With Your Values
Published about 1 month ago • 2 min read
Welcome to The Joyful Rebellion!
Because setting boundaries, resting well, and building healthier systems is radical.
🧪What's New In the Lab
Last month, I had the honor of facilitating a public health ethics training with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Ethics Advisory Committee.
We spent time grounding ourselves in a foundational (and often overlooked) question: What do we value, and how do those values show up in our organizations?
Ethical analysis isn’t just about policies, frameworks, or hypothetical dilemmas. It starts with understanding the values we carry as individuals, how those values intersect with organizational priorities, and where tensions or misalignment can shape decisions.
The photo below captures a moment from a thoughtful, energizing conversation that was a reminder of how powerful it is when leaders slow down enough to ask why before jumping to what should we do?

🎧 Work Is Third: Podcast Spotlight
You Can’t Give Your Best If You’re Not at Your Best | Chronic Illness & Care Work With Adrienne Tucker
Did you catch the most recent episode with Adrienne Tucker? Adrienne is the Founder of a nonprofit organization called Generation NOW Alaska, an organization where teens and young adults can be seen, heard, and inspired to learn, grow, and thrive in an ever-changing and evolving world while discussing challenges they face today. Adrienne is also a very passionate speaker, speaking to both youth and adults alike on topics like sex trafficking, identity, healthy community, coaching, discipleship, and more.
Adrienne and I have so much in common, and I really appreciated how she shares her own personal challenges and triumphs and sheds a light on important topics facing today's youth.
Here's one of my favorite quotes:
"My boundaries obviously are not set when I'm trying to make sure someone else is okay, but I am not okay. I can't give my best if I'm not at my best."
Employees want to experience meaning and purpose at work, but 67% of employees say that their organization's purpose is defined, and just 41% say that their organization's purpose is tied to a common goal.
Deloitte Insights, Mind the Purpose Gap
Why this matters
Adrienne Tucker's episode of Work is Third reminds us what purpose-driven work looks and feels like. But talking about purpose and embedding purpose are two different things. It's important that companies connect the dots for employees between work and purpose (individual and organizational).
The Dalai Lama’s counsel reminds us that leadership rooted in compassion strengthens resilience. Today’s leaders can help by: 👉🏽Acknowledging the emotional climate people are living in. 👉🏽Creating space for honest dialogue about how current events are affecting wellbeing. 👉🏽Taking a public, values-aligned stance that centers humanity and accountability.
Where do your personal values and your organization’s stated values clearly align, and where do they feel out of sync?
🌞 Affirmation of the Week
I honor my values as a source of clarity, courage, and care. When I act in alignment with my values, I lead with integrity.
Closing Reflection
Adrienne’s reminder—“I can’t give my best if I’m not at my best”—echoes far beyond individual boundaries. It’s also a leadership and organizational truth.
When we ask people to pour themselves into work without clarity, care, or alignment, we create purpose gaps, burnout, and ethical blind spots. But when values are named, lived, and revisited - by individuals and institutions -we create the conditions for people to show up whole.
This week, my invitation is simple: pause and check in. With yourself. With your work. With the values you want guiding both. That quiet moment of reflection might be the most ethical leadership practice of all.
👉 If you’re curious about collaborating this year—through speaking, facilitation, or strategic support—reach out. Let’s imagine what’s possible together.

Welcome to The Joyful Rebellion! Because setting boundaries, resting well, and building healthier systems is radical. 🧪What's New In the Lab February was busy! One of the highlights was speaking about Boundaries: The Leadership Habit that Builds Trust, Prevents Burnout, and Drives Results at the Junior League of St. Petersburg February General Membership Meeting. It nicely coincided with the launch of a new Junior League National Initiative called Every Woman. All Things. that challenges the...
Welcome to The Joyful Rebellion! Because setting boundaries, resting well, and building healthier systems is radical. 🧪What's New In the Lab January has been so full! A highlight was attending the first Under the Sun Chat of 2026 with Amplify Women Tampa Bay featuring Jennifer Addabbo, Co-founder and CEO of Engage fi. I loved so much about the conversation but more than that, I enjoyed the opportunity to connect with other women leaders and changemakers, including some of my book club...
Welcome to The Joyful Rebellion! Because setting boundaries, resting well, and building healthier systems is radical. 🧪What's New In the Lab Welcome back! I don't know about you, but I am feeling excited for the start of a new year. I’m easing into 2026 with intention: less urgency, more alignment, and a deeper commitment to building spaces where we can think, rest, and lead differently. I've spent the past few weeks reflecting on what worked - and what didn't - in 2025, mapping out a...
